To Protect Your Web Content

August 21, 2008 · Filed Under HowTo, Tips

Occasionally, we will come across web sites that allow surfers to browse their web sites directory contents. Let’s say, we type http://www.njessica.com/blog/wp-content/plugins/ as the URL and the following will be displayed:

 Directory Browsing

It is a good practice to ensure that the directory browsing is invisible for better web security. An obvious reason will be to avoid the content from being altered. Here are the steps to forbid the web site directory contents from being displayed:

1. Log on to the web site cPanel interface screen.

2. Locate and access the Index Manager icon:

Index Manager Icon

3. Disable the entire web site directory browsing by selecting the  /public_html/ root directory:

Index Manager Options

4. Select the No Indexing radio button. Save the changes and a successful message will be displayed:

No Indexing

Successful Saving

5. Try to access the http://www.njessica.com/blog/wp-content/plugins/ URL again and the directory browsing is forbidden!
